As most of you know, the Children’s Dyslexia Centers are nationally recognized for their dyslexia tutoring locations that provide intensive reading instruction for children in grades 1 through 12. The first such center was founded by M.W. J. Philip Berquist in Newtonville in 1992. M.W. Berquist was Thrice Potent Master of Lodge of Perfection from 1972-1975.
Our mission is to help as many students as we afford, as the students and their families are not charged anything for our services. We are supported by generous donations from many Brothers in Massachusetts, have tremendous support from the bodies of the Valley of Boston, and non-Masons also help us meet our mission.
Centers need four things to provide this free service to improve the lives of these children:
• An effective dyslexia education program. The 50+ centers in the 13-state SR NMJ have demonstrably the BEST program country.
• Necessary funding
• Appropriate space
• Qualified tutors
Today, the CDC of Greater Boston is fortunate to have adequate funding, adequate space, and excellent tutors to help about 20 students each year. We NEED the resources to help many, many more.
WE NEED MORE QUALIFIED TUTORS!
If you know of anyone who may be a qualified dyslexia tutor or wants to be trained to be a qualified tutor, please send us their name or ask them to contact us. We can and do train tutors for FREE! (Other programs can be up to $4,000).
Eligible applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and possess a strong commitment to helping children with dyslexia. Enrollees attend a few required seminars and complete a required 100-hour on-site, in-service practicum working one-to-one with two assigned students (50 hours each) during after school hours over the course of the tutoring cycle (usually one year) and under the supervision of qualified staff.
If we get more tutors, we can help more students.
We will then need more funding and perhaps more space: problems the Board of Governors happily takes on to meet our mission.
Brethren, we greatly appreciate the strong support the Valley of Boston has given this important program to help the children of Greater Boston.
If you would like more information, please contact our chair of the Board of Governors, R.W. Larry Bethune.
